Sustainability is core to the railway business and therefore it is the heart of our objectives as a company too. We think that we contribute to the creation of a better world helping to change energy behaviour to enable a transition to a carbon-free society.
Rail transport consumes significantly less energy than transport over road thanks to physical advantages such as the wheel-on-rail mechanism and air resistance. Also rail electrification enables trains to dispatch with dirty diesel-burning engines. When powered by renewables, electric trains can provide nearly emissions-free transport.
Moreover energy efficiency can be increased acting on the design phase in order to add functionalities such as energy saving driving techniques (coasting), reuse of traction energy by synchronizing departures and arrivals of trains within the same electrical substation and solar off-grid power for signals, switch machines or broken rail detectors.
We firmly believe there is a clear correlation between how a company is run and its relationship with society. As a company and as individuals, we endeavour to show that we are serious about taking the lead through changing our own behaviour.
